You're Probably Copying the Wrong Competitors

Startup Brief

Issue #301

And it's slowing your growth.

When founders want inspiration...

They usually study the biggest company in their market.

That's backwards.

Because the biggest company isn't playing the same game as you.

Imagine you launch a coffee shop.

Do you copy Starbucks?

Probably not.

Starbucks has:

  • Brand recognition
  • Thousands of locations
  • A massive marketing budget
  • Millions of loyal customers

You have none of those.

Yet founders do this online every day.

A startup with 300 customers copies a company with 3 million.

The homepage.

The pricing.

The product.

The branding.

Here's the problem.

Big companies optimize for scale.

Small companies need to optimize for trust.

Those are completely different goals.

Instead of studying the market leader...

Study the company that's two years ahead of you.

Why?

Because they're solving the same problems you're about to face.

Not the problems you'll have in five years.

Here's a practical exercise.

Find three businesses that are roughly:

  • 5x your size
  • In your niche
  • Growing fast

Now don't copy what they have.

Study what changed.

Go to the Wayback Machine.

Look at their website from:

  • 2023
  • 2024
  • 2025

Watch the evolution.

You'll notice patterns.

Maybe they:

  • Simplified their homepage.
  • Removed half their features.
  • Raised prices.
  • Changed positioning.
  • Focused on one customer type.

That's valuable.

Because you're watching real decisions...

Not polished outcomes.

Most founders compare themselves to companies at the finish line.

You should compare yourself to companies that were standing where you are now.

The best lessons don't come from copying success.

They come from understanding how success was built.
