Google Just Changed How Customers Find Products

Startup Brief

Issue #306

Most ecommerce brands are still trying to rank on Google.

Google is trying to remove the search entirely.

A customer types:

“best running shoes under $120”

A year ago, they clicked through 10 websites.

Now AI can compare products, check prices, and recommend options directly inside the search experience. Google’s shopping rollout is pushing in that direction, and Shopify has been preparing merchants for AI-driven product discovery through its catalog and storefront updates.

This creates a problem almost nobody is talking about.

Your product title is no longer being read by a human first.

It’s being read by an AI.

Your Customers Are One Text Away

You already know email gets buried and calls go unanswered. But texts? They get read — 98% of the time, within minutes.

That's why 230,000+ businesses use EZ Texting to reach their customers on the channel they engage with most

Whether you're sending promos, appointment reminders, or urgent alerts, EZ Texting makes it easy to send to 10 or 10,000 contacts in just a few clicks.

No tech skills required. You can try it free — no credit card needed.

Look at these two Shopify product titles.

Version A

“Premium Performance Tee”

Version B

“Men’s Lightweight Running Shirt – Moisture-Wicking – Black”

Humans might prefer Version A.

AI prefers Version B because it contains the information needed to answer a shopping query.

That’s the growth hack.

The 15-Minute AI Discovery Audit

Pick your 20 best-selling products.

For each one, check five things:

  • Product title includes the customer’s search words
  • Material is specified
  • Use case is specified
  • Size or quantity is specified
  • Color or variation is specified

If three of those are missing, the product is harder for AI systems to match accurately. Shopify’s own updates around AI merchandising and structured product data are moving merchants in this direction.

Here’s a real example

A supplement brand had this title:

“Daily Energy Formula”

After rewriting it to:

“Vitamin B12 Energy Supplement – 1000mcg – 60 Capsules”

They didn’t change the product.

They changed the metadata.

Search visibility improved because the product became easier to understand algorithmically.

The bigger shift

For the last decade, ecommerce optimization meant:

  • Better design
  • Better copy
  • Better SEO

Now there’s a fourth layer:

Better product data.

Shopify is syndicating eligible catalogs into AI shopping channels, and analysts are increasingly focusing on structured data quality as a competitive factor for AI discovery.

Do this before your competitors

Export your product catalog.

Add three new columns:

Customer would search

“waterproof”

Currently in title?

Yes / No

Customer would search

“wireless”

Currently in title?

Yes / No

Customer would search

“for small apartments”

Currently in title?

Yes / No

Customer would search

“under 5 lbs”

Currently in title?

Yes / No

Customer would search

“for beginners”

Currently in title?

Yes / No

Fill it out for your top products.

The gaps become your next optimization list.

The companies that win the next wave of ecommerce won’t necessarily have better products.

They’ll have products that AI can understand better than everyone else’s.
